Back in 1977, Bob was looking for a ball joint for his 1966 Thunderbird in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and couldn’t find one anywhere, so he ended up buying a car from a scrap yard just to get that one ball joint. And so a business was born. Bob took the rest of the car apart and began selling used Thunderbird parts, because there were no new parts available in the late 1970’s. In the early days, Bob focused on selling used parts at car shows and flea markets, making connections, and building a large collection of used Thunderbird parts along the way.
Over time, most (but not all) Thunderbird parts were remade and more new parts became available to Thunderbird owners. Bob’s Bird House expanded too to sell both used and new parts, while continuing to specialize in those hard-to-find special parts that can make or break a renovation. Having taken hundreds of Thunderbirds apart over the past three decades, Bob’s Bird House has an extensive inventory that can’t be matched elsewhere.
In 2010, ownership of Bob’s Bird House transitioned to Charles Meehan who is often found answering the phones and talking with customers from around the world about the smallest part to full restorations. Charles has a deep knowledge of and love for Thunderbirds along with extensive marketing, inventory, and internet experience.
As Bob’s Bird House grows, so do the ways we can help our customers. Although you will still see us at car shows, our business has expanded significantly to include repair and restorations, while increasingly leveraging online sourcing, web sales and servicing, and worldwide shipping. We’re proud to have customers on every continent but one.
Today, Bob’s Bird House is located in an old firehouse that Charles and his hardworking team converted into a large warehouse with multiple restoration bays. Located on Clinton Street in quaint Delaware City, Bob’s Bird House is just south of Wilmington and near many major routes. So stop on by, we’d be happy to show you around.
